Johnny Depp spent more money a month on wine than previously reported. He also spent more money shooting Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes into space than was reported. Oh, and he spent more on houses than any person in their right mind.

He spent so much money he barely has any money left, and over the years he’s had about $650 million (Dh2.3 billion) to spend.

It’s enough to give a reader a hangover — and we haven’t even talked yet about his use of booze and drugs.

“I’m just a small part of this,” the actor tells Rolling Stone in a buzzed-about profile about his financial and legal situation these days. The interview spanned 72 hours at Depp’s rented mansion in London. “It’s the ... Matrix. I didn’t see the movie, and I didn’t understand the script, but here’s what it is.”

That Depp doesn’t understand money is readily apparent in the magazine’s profile of the actor. Also that he really likes drugs and alcohol and consumes them pretty much all the time, at least during his time with its reporter. What’s unclear is whether he’s a hapless victim who never matured past a certain age, or a carefree spendthrift dancing around reality.

Very clear? Depp has parted ways with a lot of cash.

The 53-year-old has sued his former team, the Management Group, and they’re suing him back, each hurling accusations about vast sums of money. Both sides are deeply committed to their versions of events. Both agree that Depp paid taxes late for 13 years, but disagree on whose fault that was. They agree that he took on projects in large part for the paychecks.

“I have never, ever in my life been the bully kid,” Depp told the magazine. “I never went out of my way to hurt anybody. When I was a little kid, what I was taught was never ... start a fight, but if somebody ... tags you or invades your ... world, finish the ... fight. To my mum’s exact words, ‘Lay them out with a ... brick.’”

He says his son had to learn from other kids from school about his father losing all his money. “That’s not right,” Depp says.

Confirming at least part of the rumour that he couldn’t remember his lines while filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Depp finally admits he uses an earpiece when he acts and has his lines read to him.

“Some of my biggest heroes were in silent film. It had to be behind the eyes,” he says. “And my feeling is, that if there’s no truth behind the eyes, doesn’t matter what the ... words are.”

Depp paid a sound engineer to do the job.
