Bangkok: The late actress Sridevi, who died in Dubai due to accidental drowning in February this year, won the Best Actor (female) posthumously at this year’s International Indian Film Academy Awards in Bangkok’s Siam Niramit Theatre for her role in the thriller Mom.

Actor Irrfan Khan, who is undergoing treatment for neuroendocrine tumour in London, won the Best Actor (Male) for his role in the comedy Hindi Medium, a satire on India’s education system.

Sridevi’s husband and producer Boney Kapoor was visibly-shaken as he accepted the golden statuette with sun’s rising rays on his wife’s behalf. He couldn’t hold back tears and in an emotionally-charged he said; “I miss you every day and every moment of my life.”

He could hardly complete his sentence about his wife that he walked off stage dabbing tears, while host Karan Johar hugged him tight to comfort him.

The Best Picture went to Tumhari Sulu, starring Vidya Balan in which she played a housewife-turned-risque RJ.

But she wasn’t there in person to accept the trophy.

Co-producer Dinesh Vijan accepted the trophy on her behalf.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui won the Best Supporting Actor for his role in Mom. He too remembered Sridevi, his co-star whom he called the most inspiring actress that he has ever met.

Secret Superstar’s Meher Vij, in which she played an abused housewife in a troubled marriage, took home the Best Supporting Actor (female).

“Chak De Phatte,” screamed Vij with her fists pumped in the air, alluding to the Punjabi cry of victory.

Director Konkona Sen Sharma, won the Best Debut director, for her thriller and drama A Death In The Gunj.

The night awarded films and talents even if they weren’t present at the ceremony which could go a long way in busting the belief that an actor who attends a long-winded awards ceremony walks home with some trophy, almost as a consolation prize.

The night also saw spectacular performances from Rekha, who returned to the stage after over two decades, and by Ranbir Kapoor who made his stage entry like a rockstar among the audience with a guitar strapped to him.
