Ace choreographer Prabhudeva, whose nimble and gravity-defying moves have earned him the label of being India’s answer to Michael Jackson, will showcase his legendary dance steps at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on April 20. The avant-garde choreographer, who later branched into acting and directing, is a man of few words. He prefers to let his dance do all the talking.

But in an interview with Gulf News tabloid!, he promised that the show will be one of the most spectacular dance performances of his life.

“It will be a night where pure dance will be celebrated… It’s a full-fledged dance show,” said Prabhudeva.

The 45-year-old, who revolutionised the choreography scene in Indian films by designing steps for films such as Roja and Bombay, will be accompanied by a team of actresses such as Isha Talwar, Dhanushka and singer Shankar Mahadevan and his son Siddharth Mahadevan.

Prabhudeva recently starred in the silent thriller Mercury as its antagonist.

Here’s his take on...

His show ‘Mathrubhumi Live With The Legends: Prabhu Deva Dance Concert’:

“It’s the first time in my career I am doing a dance concert. I can promise you that it will be energetic and colourful. The show will be filled with my super hit dance numbers. While it is not easy to recreate what you see on the big screen to the stage, we will attempt to do that. My goal will be to entertain everyone through dance.”

His journey in dance

“I am always in the dancer zone. Earlier when I was young, I used to get nervous and tense. There were times when I attempted to do several heavy and fast steps, but with experience I have learnt the art of knowing where to stop, when to dance and when to add heavy, fast moves. Dancing is a pure art for me.”

On his process of preparing for a stage show

“I practise a lot before such a show. I practise my moves to such an extent that my muscle memory will start kicking in. And that means, even if I forget my steps, my body is used to a certain form and it will dance automatically. I will be at that stage before my show. The key is to ensure that your stamina and energy will build up by the time you hit the stage. We took around 22 days to decide on the songs that we will be dancing to. In my show, building stamina is one of the most important components. We may sweat, but the idea is to give the most spectacular experiences for the viewers.”

Being called India’s Michael Jackson

“They are calling me that with love. But I know only one dance — my own style. I love my job and I don’t consider it work. Dancing gives me such pleasure that I enjoy it thoroughly.”
