Rekha returns to the stage after several decades and wraps up 2018 Iifa.

And finally, Best Picture goes to....Tumhari Sulu, the comedy-drama featuring Vidya Balan. In the movie, Balan plays a housewife-turned-risque RJ.

Best Actor (Female) goes to the late actress Sridevi, for her powerful performance in Mom. Producer Boney Kapoor accepts it on his wife’s behalf. He is too emotional to speak.

The award for Best Actor (Male) goes to Irrfan Khan for his role in the dramedy Hindi Medium. Producer Dinesh Vijan accepts the trophy on his behalf. Khan, who was recently diagnosed with near-fatal neuroendocrine cancer, is undergoing treatment in London.

But the show must go on. Ranbir Kapoor takes the stage.

The Iifa Awards touch a sombre note as Sridevi, who died in Dubai due to accidental drowning, is remembered. Anil Kapoor gives a glowing tribute to his late sister-in-law Sridevi. “She was a true genius,” he says. The country, the world and India and our family misses you, he adds. "I miss her every moment of my life,” says Boney Kapoor with tears running down his cheek. The Kapoor family is emotional as a minute of silence is observed.

Saket Chaudhary is named the Best Director for his movie Hindi Medium, a situational comedy based on social issues. The film features Irrfan Khan.

Shraddha Kapoor takes to the stage.It’s nearing 1am in Bangkok. The stars are making merry by dancing.

Anil Kapoor is called on stage to speak about Anupam Kher, who will be receiving the outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema.Kapoor calls Kher his biggest confidante and the best actor in India today. He recounts the time when he lost a role in the acclaimed Hollywood film Silver Linings Playbook to Kher. The result: A standing ovation for Kher. “I feel I have just started, you decide your own demand,” says Kher while accepting the honour. He dedicates it to all those who don’t have godfathers in the Bollywood industry and to his mother.

The award for the Best Story goes to Amit V. Masurka, for Newton, which stars Rajkummar Rao in the lead. 

Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon bring the house down with their moves. Even Sanon's entrance has people entranced. She emerges from a swing, which began at the ceiling.

Meher Vij takes home the title of Best Supporting Actress for her role in Secret Superstar. In the movie, she plays a victim of domestic abuse with a spine of steel who will stop at nothing to help her daughter achieve her dreams. Varun Dhawan says she’s truly deserving of the award and her win fills him with great pride.

Rekha takes the stage to award actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui the trophy for Best Supporting Actor for his stint in Mom. The actor dedicates his win to his late co-star Sridevi, he is teary-eyed as he speaks her name. The audience is touched when Rekha consoles Siddiqui. She promises that Sridevi will live on through her, adding  that she’s in her heart, too.

“Don’t call me Sir, call me AK,” says Anil Kapoor, father of Veere Di Wedding actress Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, as he breaks into a song.

Bobby Deol returns to the stage with a medley of his hits. 

Badrinath Ki Dulhania wins the prize of Best Music Composer for Amaal Mallik, Akhil Sachdeva and Tanishk Bagchi. They sing while accepting their award.

Rishi Kapoor - who was last seen in the movie 102 Not Out alongside Amitabh Bachchan - and his son, Ranbir Kapoor, paid a glowing tribute to the late star Shashi Kapoor. Shashi passed away last year  after a prolonged kidney ailment. He was 79.

Actor Varun Dhawan is setting the stage on fire.

The winner is named for best lyrics: Manoj Muntashir, who wrote Mere Rashke Qamar  (2017’s Baadshaho).

Kriti Sanon is named style icon.

The audience is entranced by playback singer Meghna as she takes to the stage to perform her winning song Main Kaun Ho, from the 2017 blockbuster Secret Superstar.

And that's a hit. The whole auditorium is singing and clapping along with Shraddha Kapoor, who sings her hit number Galiyaan, from the movie Ek Villain. And now, a winner is announced. Arijit Singh takes the prize for Best Playback for his song Hawayein, which features in Jab Harry Met Sejal. The movie, written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, stars Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma as the leads.

It's day three of the International Indian Film Academy Awards (Iifa) on Sunday,and soon the stars will start tricking in.

 

Drama isn’t limited to the world of Bollywood films. On the second day of the 18th edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards (Iifa) on Saturday, there was plenty of action to keep us entertained. While Lulia Vantur, who sang the polarising hit Selfish from Race 3, rapped for us exclusively, actress-producer Dia Mirza had to leave a press interaction midway after an outbreak of a food allergy. Mushrooms aren’t for everyone.

The awards weekend will culminate on Sunday night with the likes of Ranbir Kapoor, Rekha, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in attendance. Until then, here’s what went down on the second day of the three-day event:

Lulia Vantur credits her success to Salman Khan

The Romanian TV host, who is famous for being the rumoured girlfriend of Salman Khan, did not shy away from crediting her budding singing career to the superstar.

“He [Salman Khan] encouraged me to sing … He heard my voice first and he encouraged me to do this. I didn’t believe in me as much as he did. I should always trust what he says. He has this vision. He knows so much about what is right or wrong,” Vantur told tabloid!.

While she may be grateful to Khan, her powerful mentor couldn’t protect her from the polarising reviews that her recent song Selfish generated. Its lyrics were heavily trolled and mocked at, with memes being generated instantly. But Vantur won’t let her haters get to her.

“We have made this song with a lot of love and we have been invested in it. But you take in what is important to you. I take in the love … If they don’t like it, then I will just try harder,” said Vantur, who is currently taking Hindi language lessons and who idolises Priyanka Chopra for her re-invention skills.

Food allergy breaks up Dia Mirza press meet

Dia Mirza, who will feature in this week’s Bollywood release Sanju starring Ranbir Kapoor, had to make a hasty exit during press interaction in Bangkok on Saturday evening due to a food allergy attack. Perhaps, the mushroom in the Thai curry didn’t sit well with the actress, who broke out into a red rash.

One minute she was speaking about the lack of good roles for Indian actresses who are past their thirties and the poster of Mother India that she had purchased at the auction held on the sidelines of IIFA, and the next she was bing ushered out.

While the Parmaanu actress loves high heels and fashion, she’s all for pragmatic fashion choices.

“I love heels, but they are so uncomfortable. I don’t see why flats shouldn’t be allowed on the red carpet,” said Penty.

Asked if the MeToo movement in Hollywood against sexual harassment at workplace would percolate to Bollywood, she said it would take time.

“There have a few people who have been vocal and gutsy. Kudos to them. It is incredibly brave of them … But it will take time. Women should always support each other. Hopefully, one day there won’t be a need for a MeToo movement because women will feel protected and safe. But maybe, I am being idealistic,” said Penty. She will soon be seen in the sequel of Happy Bhaag Jayegi.

“Happy Phir Bhaag Jayegi is fun, quirky … Comedy is fun but it isn’t easy,” said Penty.
