Moroccan singer Ahmad Sultan has been chosen by fans as the winner of the Best Middle East/North African Act for the MTV EMA awards. He now competes with singers from Africa and India for the next round of voting.

The Moroccan singer Ahmad Sultan has been voted the top musician in the Middle East-North Africa region in a fan vote for the upcoming MTV EMA awards.

Sultan was named Best Middle East North Africa Act on Sunday night and will now go through to the second stage of the fan contest, where he will face off against the winners from the Africa and India segments. The winner of that round then faces winners from North and South America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, and will collect their award at the ceremony in Frankfurt, Germany, on November 11.

The singer found success with his first single, “Ya Salam”, an example of what he calls Afrobian Soul, which is a blend of Afro-Arabian. He’s at the forefront of the new Moroccan music scene, called Nayda.

Fans can for vote in the next stage from today until October 30.

The MTV EMAs will this year be hosted by German model Heidi Klum; Taylor Swift (herself a top nominee, after Rihanna), Muse, No Doubt, Carly Rae Jepsen, fun. and Rita Ora will be presenting awards.
