Starting from September 2, visitors to Al Mureijah Square in Sharjah will have the opportunity to check out more than 100 works of South Asian art featured in a major exhibition called Pop South Asia: Artistic Explorations in the Popular.
Organised by the Sharjah Art Foundation and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, the exhibition will run until December 11 offering a chance to discover works from the mid-20th century to the present, by artists who take on the plights of society through the use of a theme of irony, humour, and playfulness.
The Sharjah Art Foundation will host artists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and further, focusing on works created using traditional crafting methods and folk culture, as well as print, cinematic and digital media. Curated by artist Iftikhar Dadi, Professor John H. Burris of Cornell University, and Roobina Karode, Director and Chief Curator of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, the Pop South Asia exhibition explores themes of capitalism, consumer culture, and the media, with a relevancy reaching far wider than just South Asia.
