As part of a commitment to public art and 40 new installations in Qatar in time for the FIFA World Cup, Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s “Doha Mountains” are unveiled near 974 Stadium
Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s work is immediately recognisable with his frequent use of fluorescent colours for his large-scale installations often resembling totems and ancient megaliths. He has displayed public art in San Francisco, Liverpool, New York and all over the work, and now Rondinone’s work can be seen roadside along Doha’s Ras Abou Aboud beachfront.
The public art installation "Doha Mountains" by Rondinone was officially unveiled near the 974 Stadium, inspired by the colours of the Olympic Rings to reflect Qatar's dedication to the Olympic Values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
Rondinone’s “Doha Mountains” is just one of 40 installations that are part of Qatar’s commitment to public art, with new works being added in time for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. When completed the 40 new installations will add up to a total of more than 100 public artworks across Qatar from the desert to the bustling centre of Doha.
Apart from “Doha Mountains” highlights of the new installations include “Dugong” by American artist Jeff Koons, on view at Al Masrah Park; a mosaic installation by American artist Rashid Johnson; “Doha Modern Playground” by London-based artist Shezad Dawood at Al Masrah Park; and Qatari artist Shouq Al Mana's “Egal” along the Lusail Marina Promenade to name just a few.
