This weekend’s do-not-miss events

Go glam at a Burj — or two
Tuesday night marked the opening of a whole new level of glitz at the Burj Al Arab with their Gold on 27 bar. The new outlet — part of a revamp of the hotel’s food and beverage offerings — boasts incredible views across the city and sea, and is decorated with just a touch of gold.
Who are we kidding? It’s totally covered in the stuff — if King Midas were around, this would be his favourite watering hole. They’ve taken great care and creativity over the drinks list — some include foie gras or truffle — created by mixologist Paul Bradley. We loved the mix of tunes by resident DJ Darko De Jan (think lounge-y takes on The Cure) and the impeccable service. It opens to the public from April 8, open daily 6pm-1am, with live DJ daily from 8pm; make a booking through an app, goldon27.com or 04-3017600. If you’re planning ahead, make a booking for brunch at Dubai’s other big Burj — Burj Khalifa. At.mosphere, the restaurant on level 122, serves brunch only four times a year, and the first one this year is April 22. Expect caviar and family-style dishes served at your table, four live stations, a raw bar and desserts (sea salt-caramel religieuse, passionfruit Baba, tarte tatin and Paris Brest. It’s Dh880 or Dh680; call 04-8883828.
A fun run
Nowdays, no one just goes for a jog. We already have runs with coloured powder, UV lights — and now there’s foam. Friday’s Big Bubble Run, at Dubai Autodrome, has foam showers and foam baths along the 5km course, and costume is encouraged. The hub is the Bubble Base, with face painting and bubble making stations and music. Individual passes are Dh185 at bigbubblerun.com.
Have a laugh
Friday’s EIC Vs Bollywood show could be your payback to the Bollywood actors and directors who have subjected you to terrible films in 2015.
Three Indian comedians — Sorabh Pant, Sahil Shah and Sapan Verma — will take it upon themselves to honour the worst in Bollywood film. Previously known as the Ghanta Awards, the trio promise a whacky, over-the-top, crazy night. Nobody will be spared, including Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale or Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. 8.30pm, at the Godolphin Ballroom, Emirates Towers. Tickets, Dh100, Dh200 and Dh350, at platinumlist.net.
See a unique puppet-based film
Our pick of this weekend’s films is Anomalisa — a smart, heartbreaking study of modern humanity told through puppets. It’s got a 92 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the creative input of Charlie Kaufman, who co-directed and wrote this Oscar-nominated picture. The brilliant David Thewlis (aka Remus Lupin from the Harry Potter films) takes on the lead role of sad-sack Michael Stone; Jennifer Jason Leigh is his (anoma)Lisa.
Pick up some art
Got empty walls? Head to World Art Dubai all weekend to view and buy works by regional and global artists and galleries that are all under Dh40,000. There are modern, contemporary and fine art works with a focus on appealing to every budget. The 3,000 paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs start from Dh367.
Featuring fresh, contemporary and accessible pieces from new and established galleries and artists, the four-day art extravaganza will also boast an expanded programme of engaging educational sessions, cultural activities and world-class entertainment. It’s at Dubai World Trade Centre until April 9, 2-9pm daily. Entry is Dh15.
Experience Hareem Al Sultan
Before Game of Thrones, there was Hareem Al Sultan, the Turkish historical drama based on the life of Ottoman sultan Suleyman the Magnificent and his love story with Hurrem Sultan, a former slave girl. The series became a cultural sensation after it was dubbed in Arabic and shown across the Middle East between 2011 and 2014. Now, UAE fans can get up close and personal with their beloved series with Hareem Al Sultan: The Exhibition at City Walk, featuring costumes, sets, life-like figures of characters and recreation of life inside the Topkapi palace, the setting of the show. tabloid! had a sneak-peek at the showcase and came out mighty impressed. Audio commentary is available in English and Arabic. Dh100 for entry. Dh50 for children under seven. Ticket prices will go up next month. Open daily from 12 to 10pm. www.ticketmaster.ae
