Filmmaking workshop for kids launched in Dubai

Four-month programme to see youngsters taught everything from scripting to filming

The UAE’s first mini film festival is here, kind of.

Future Filmmaker Summer Camp, a month-long event hosted by Reel Cinemas from August 1 to 31, will see kids attend workshops on filmmaking taught by experts and then work on their own projects from scripting to filming. The programme will then culminate in a gala ceremony on September 3 where the films will be screened and the youngsters will walk the red carpet along with VIPs and film professionals.

“We are encouraging a strong cinematic culture among our children by introducing them to the various aspects of filmmaking. The early initiation into the techniques and craft of making films will help in developing the next generation of cinematic talent in the country,” said Maitha Al Dossari, the chief executive officer of Emaar Retail.

Murdoch University Dubai will develop the programme while Nikon will provide equipment and prizes.

The four-week programme costs Dh1,500 per participant and is open to children between the ages of 9 to 18 years old. The first three modules of the workshop will be conducted at Reel Cinemas, The Dubai Mall, from 9am to 1.30pm; Sunday to Thursday. The fourth module will be taught at Murdoch University campus in Dubai International Academic City. For registration, go to www.reelcinemas.ae.
