Dr Rameshwari Sivaprakash talks about understanding hormonal changes

Our skin changes as we age. Hormonal fluctuations play a crucial role in women’s skin health, influencing hydration, elasticity, and overall appearance.
Puberty (teenage years): An increase in hormones, especially androgens, leads to acne, oily skin, excessive sweating, and hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.
Tips: Use a gentle cleanser, oil-free moisturiser, and acne treatments. Chemical peels, microneedling, and subcision can help with acne scars for faster results.
Pregnancy (adult years): Fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone can cause melasma (pregnancy mask), acne, stretch marks (on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts), varicose and spider veins, and itchy skin conditions such as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP).
Tips: Use pregnancy-safe skincare products, vitamin C serum for melasma, and daily sun protection.
Menopause (midlife and beyond): A decline in hormone levels accelerates aging effects, including dryness, thinning skin, loss of collagen (wrinkles, sagging), increased sensitivity, dark spots, and delayed wound healing.
Tips: Use hydrating creams, sun protection, and retinol to boost collagen. CO2 laser treatments rejuvenate facial skin, while Botox smooths fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers can restore lost volume.

Simple lifestyle changes can ease common gynaecological issues, says Dr Nisha Bhardwaj, Specialist – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cosmocare Medical Center
As a gynaecologist at Cosmocare Medical Center for the past few years, I have observed that while women have become more aware of their health conditions, many still face challenges in prioritising their well-being due to tight work schedules, lack of family support, and long commuting hours.
One common gynaecological issue I would like to highlight is Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). As many as three out of four menstruating women experience PMS, with symptoms typically beginning a week before their period.
These can range from mild discomforts such as bloating, food cravings, and mood swings to more distressing symptoms like sleep disturbances, poor concentration, fatigue, breast pain, and headaches.
We emphasise the importance of simple lifestyle changes, regular exercise, and proper vitamin intake to help manage PMS. However, if symptoms become too severe, it is advisable to consult a doctor to
rule out other conditions and receive appropriate treatment.
We also see many patients struggling with irregular and painful periods due to hormonal imbalances. At Cosmocare, we offer comprehensive check-ups and lifestyle counseling to help manage stress, which has shown excellent results. Additionally, recurrent vaginal infections and urinary tract infections can be overwhelming and require a thorough medical evaluation.
At Cosmocare, we are committed to women’s health through all life stages. Our services include a dedicated Antenatal Clinic, Contraceptive Services, a Well-Woman Clinic, Infertility Treatment, and a Menopause Clinic, ensuring comprehensive care for every woman.
