Dubai: Hosts GEMS Wellington International School Dubai (WIS) hogged the limelight at the conclusion of the inaugural GEMS Sports Series’ Basketball Cup.

The WIS claimed four outright wins while clinching titles in the boy’s and girls under-12 and in the boy’s under-14 and under-16 categories to stamp their class on the first-ever competition of this nature.

The WIS under-16 boy’s team took the crown after they finished ahead of Dubai American Academy and The Millennium School Dubai.

“Basketball continues to flourish at WIS and winning in the four age categories at the inaugural tournament is testament to the hard work and dedication the players have put in during the year. We’ve had some great support from our Principal over the years that allows us to provide our students with every opportunity to train and play to the best of their ability,” Greg Campbell, Head Coach GEMS Wellington International School Dubai said.

The boy’s under-10 title went to GEMS Royal Dubai School, followed by Jumeirah Primary School, Dubai and Cambridge International School Dubai. The under-12 teams from WIS were simply too good as they beat Cambridge International School (CIS) Dubai in the boy’s section, and won against GEMS Metropole School (MTS) in the girls’ competition.

“The GEMS Basketball Cup is such a strong addition to the GEMS Sports Series because of the great number of youth teams participating locally and players who will one day be the future of their clubs and national teams. Our objective from this tournament is to provide a competitive platform for promising youth players and we look forward to using this tournament as a window for them to take their game to a higher level,” James Bowring, Managing Director, ESM, said.
