Advanced geometry

Geometric patterns have transitioned from the runway to the world of interior design. Here’s how you can get this look to work in your own home.

Start small

If you’re new to geometrics, introduce it in small doses to start with - cushions, throws, rugs or even statement artwork framed on a wall (this is a great way to introduce a vivid geometric wallpaper if you’re not quite brave enough to use it over an entire wall).

Keep it simple

Pick up on just one or two key colours in the design, an use those as accents elsewhere - preferably in a block colour so that the eye has somewhere to ‘rest’. If you do want to add other patterns as well - perhaps a floral, do so but keep to the main colourway, and don’t overdo it!

Think proportion

By their very nature, geometric patterns are bold and arresting, so scale - in both the design and space where they will be used - needs to be taken into account to stop the patterns from overwhelming or getting lost. Look at the ‘family’ of both large-and small-scale prints in designers’ geometric collections: they show how to achieve striking effects, but in varying proportions.
