Carve an escape for yourself where you get lost in stories can recharge
Hot chocolate, an armchair and a book: Enid Blyton inspired my idea for a ‘reading nook’ at home in childhood. Reading was meant to signify warmth, comfort and escape, and there was nothing cosier than this small corner.
The good news is that designing a nook doesn’t require a grand budget or breaking down the walls. It just means using items around the house to carve that escape, so you can get lost in stories and recharge. You travel miles without moving your feet.
So, how do you go about doing this? Abu Dhabi-based designers, Claire Mills and Cassandra Davis have some suggestions.
Find your perfect spot
The first step in creating your dream nook is choosing the ideal location. It doesn't have to be a large space, just a corner or even a small section of a room can work wonders. Look for a spot that offers some peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Natural light is a bonus. Not only does it add a cosy ambiance but also reduces eye strain when reading. A corner by the window or near a bookshelf works wonderfully.
Armchair? Yes please!
The heart of any reading nook is the seat. So, consider something plush, soft, and inviting. Perhaps a cosy armchair, a cushioned window seat, or even a hammock chair if you’re going for a laid-back vibe. A deep, comfortable chair that lets you sink in is perfect for long reading sessions. Don’t forget throw pillows or cushions for extra comfort, and if you want that extra bit of luxury, a soft, knitted throw blanket can make your nook feel even more inviting.
Lighting matters
The corner needs proper lighting. Aim for warm, soft lighting that won't strain your eyes. A combination of a floor lamp or table lamp with adjustable brightness works well. If you're lucky enough to have a place by a window, natural light will do the trick during the day. For nighttime reading, opt for a lamp with a dimmer switch or a reading light that can be easily adjusted without disrupting the mood.
Surround yourself with books
It wouldn’t be complete without a personal library, now would it? If you have the space, add a bookshelf or two. It could be a tall, freestanding bookcase or a quirky, repurposed ladder shelf that fits your space and style. The beauty of a reading space is that it becomes a treasure chest for your favourite novels and new discoveries. If space is tight, go for wall-mounted shelves or floating shelves to keep your books within arm's reach while saving valuable space.
Add personal touches
Framed art, plants, warm rugs, what’s your pick? Incorporate some soft textures like woven baskets to store magazines or extra blankets. A small table for a cup of tea or a notebook is a delightful addition if you like to take notes or jot down thoughts while reading. The idea is to create a space that feels like a reflection of your tastes—whether it's minimalist and sleek, boho and eclectic, or classic and something from a book you've read.
How about a map of Middle Earth to set the scene?
Include a blanket and warm drinks
What’s better than curling up with a good book and a hot cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa? Keep a side table or tray nearby for your favourite beverage. Add a soft, warm blanket for when the temperatures drop, or even a footstool for extra comfort. The key to a great reading nook is that it feels like an indulgent retreat, a place where you can completely unwind.
Declutter and organise
Don’t clutter your space! A well-organised, comfy space is necessary for your reading time. Keep the area neat and tidy, and opt for clever storage solutions that help organise your books, magazines, and accessories. If your nook is also home to your favorite knick-knacks, make sure they are neatly arranged to avoid distractions from your reading. The less clutter, the better the flow of relaxation.
