Ask the expert: facials make my face red

I would advise you to immediately stop getting facials

I’m 26, and have what my beautician calls sensitive skin. Every time she does my facial I end up with an inflamed face, which lasts for two to three days. Why does this happen? Help!

First, let me assure you that this is one of the most common questions I’m asked. Sensitive skin is most prevalent in people suffering from atopic dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), allergic rhinitis (hay fever), bronchial asthma or frequent eye, throat or skin irritations. They find their skin to be intolerant to many chemicals or products. The intensity of the reactions depends on the concentration of the contactant (the substance to which skin is exposed) and the duration and frequency of contact.

In some cases, even minute quantities of an allergen over short periods of time can lead to allergic reactions.

Treatment can only be prescribed after a thorough check-up and a detailed skin examination. I would advise you to immediately stop getting facials. Gather all the skincare products your beautician has been using on you, and visit an experienced dermatologist. You will need to undergo a skin patch test to determine allergic contact dermatitis reactions, if any.
