Although Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, along with their six kids, certainly added some glitz and glam to the fascinating island of Malta, it would be unfair to this Mediterranean isle to say that it's the celebs who've journeyed there that add the interest.

From its North African-Arabic influences and Sicilian-inspired cuisine, to its impressive history, architecture and, of course, many beaches, this eclectic, sun-kissed spot has it's own buzz going on.

After filming Troy there back in 2003, the upcoming apocalyptic zombie movie World War Z will be the second movie Brad's made on the island that's been the backdrop to plenty of A-list flicks over the years, with the Jolie-Pitt brood spotted enjoying the tranquil beaches of both Malta and neighbouring island, Gozo.

Lots to do from day to knight!

Obligatory holiday sunbathing and visiting of restaurants and clubs aside, make time to explore all three islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - the latter two a ferry ride from Malta, and much more peaceful. From prehistoric temples to fiestas involving noisy firework displays, rattling buses to brightly coloured fishing boats, this island nation is a sightseers' dream.

Having been held throughout the years by several foreign rulers, including the Romans, Phoenicians, Byzantines, Arabs and more recently the French and British, Malta boasts a rich history, evident in its architecture. The pint-sized capital city of Valletta is chock-full of historical and architectural gems, with the city housing the magnificent Fort St Elmo, built to guard the Marsamxett and Grand Harbours.

Also be sure to visit the National Museum of Archaeology, which is located in the Auberge de Provence, for a quick history recap, before stopping at the Grand Master's Palace for a tour of the armoury that once belonged to the Knights Hospitallers. Also pop by the Lascaris War Rooms - the chambers, carved out of the rock, housed the allied air and naval forces during the Second World War.

And when the stroll back leaves your feet aching and your stomach demanding to be fed, head to the Xara Palace Relais and Chateaux for a well-deserved gastronomic feast of their signature crab salad, poached rockfish, and delicious seafood risotto, just like Brad and Angie!
