After a five-year hiatus, Larry David is headed back to HBO with a ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

“In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned,’” David said in a statement announcing the news.

Casey Bloys, the new president of HBO programming, said, “We’re thrilled that Larry has decided to do a new season of Curb and can’t wait to see what he has planned.” No other details were announced, and no air date was provided.

HBO executives hinted to a return from David last year during the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills.

“The last time I saw Larry was right before his play [Fish in the Dark] premiered,” said former HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo at the time. “He pulled out a little notebook and said, ‘Know what this is? It’s the next season.’ ... I don’t think it’s out of his system. I think he wants to have something to say.”

Since Curb Your Enthusiasm ended its last season in 2011, David has kept busy with other projects, including appearances on Saturday Night Live and Broadway.

In 2012, David played orphanage nun Sister Mary-Mengele in the reboot of The Three Stooges, and in 2013 he co-wrote and starred in the HBO film Clear History.

David made his Broadway debut starring and writing in the play Fish in the Dark, which premiered in 2015. His co-stars included Rita Wilson, Jayne Houdyshell and Rosie Perez. The play, which resonates with the same dark comedic themes as those of his HBO show, centres on a family mourning their father’s death.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is the longest-running comedy or drama series on HBO. The popular show has been nominated for 38 Emmy Awards and won the 2002 Golden Globe for television series — musical or comedy.
