‘American Idol’ to receive TV academy’s Governors Award
Reality show to be honoured for its impact on television and influence on pop culture
American Idol is receiving the TV academy’s 2016 Governors Award for its impact on television.
The academy said on Friday that the Fox singing contest was more than a hit, citing its use of social media, influence on the pop-culture conversation — and the talent-show imitators it spawned.
The Governors Award honours achievement that goes beyond the scope of Emmy Award recognition.
American Idol, which ended its 15-year run on Fox this spring, was a ratings blockbuster but never captured top Emmy honours in the reality-competition programme category.
It isn’t up for the award at the September 18 Emmys airing on ABC, but host Ryan Seacrest has a final chance to be honoured as best reality series host.
