It’s not just his dark glasses and his Russian name (inspired by Prince Mysskin of Doestovksy’s Idiot) that sets him apart. Tamil director Mysskin’s six films are strikingly different from each other.

His debut Chithiram Pesuthadi was a romantic drama and his last outing was the critically acclaimed Onaaiyum Aattikuttiyum, a thriller. And can anyone forget his second film, Anjathe, a social drama that catapulted actors Naren and Ajmal to fame?

This time Mysskin explores horror in Pisaasu.

Mysskin said, “A young woman is murdered under mysterious circumstances and her spirit torments not just her killers but also innocent people.”

Prayaga, from Kerala, is making her debut while Naga plays Siddharth, a violinist. Radha Ravi plays a significant role as a father.

“I have added elements of eeriness to the story, recalling moments from my childhood days, when I used to fear ghosts,” added the director who enjoyed reading books of Edgar Allen Poe.

Written by Myskkin, Pisaasu, was shot in Chennai.

Hollywood’s action choreographer Tony Leung was roped in to shoot the climax scene, which required Prayaga to dangle from a rope at a height of 30 metres.

“Prayaga was fantastic and she performed these scenes without a [stunt double],” Mysskin revealed.

What about computer graphics?

“We used technology to camouflage graphic work to enhance the quality of the film without interfering in the story telling. Our aim was to make it as natural as possible.”

Talking about his maiden role, Naga, who assisted director Bala earlier, said that he trained under a violinist for three months. He also grew his hair and beard.

“In fact Siddharth’s hair is long enough to cover his eyes,” he added.

As for working under Mysskin, he said, “It was a wonderful learning experience not just as an actor, but I also learned about life merely watching the director.”

Pisaasu is produced by director Bala. Music is scored by Arrol Corelli and Ravee Roy is the cinematographer.

Watch out for Pisaasu when it hits theatres on December 19.
