Obsessed: Queen Bey stings

Last updated:

Normally known for her nice-girl image, it comes as a surprise to learn that Beyonce Knowles, 27, might happily trade punches with another woman. But in her new psychothriller Obsessed, releasing in the UAE today, Queen Bey does just that. Here she explains why she loved her chance at cat-fighting and how she manages to stay in shape.

In Obsessed, it looks like you were throwing real punches...

I was throwing real punches. Actually, I've been taking boxing lessons and used some of the skills in the movie. And I think I literally scared Ali Larter because she was like ‘Okay! I thought you were always quiet and calm.'
In between the takes, I was like ‘Grrrrrr' and really bruised up. I just wanted more blood. I definitely loved doing the fight scenes because they were similar to the choreography. Moreover, I'm always so politically correct, so nice and positive....

How does Jay-Z know you can fight like that?

We've never fought, obviously, but Jay knows I've got a fighting spirit in me. I'm a lover and a fighter, but I fight on stage and usually that's when I'm able to let go and release whatever tension I have. I don't fight physically, but I do fight my barriers mentally.

How do you stay in shape?

With dancing and diet and staying away from food that's bad for me – the same as others will do if they want to lose weight.

How is married life with Jay?

I really don't like to talk about it. People come up to me and say ‘Congratulations'. So I say ‘Thank you very much'. But that's all. I am still the same really private person and it has worked.

What is everyday life like for you?

I do go out shopping, I love it. I don't want to be one of those celebrities who stay in a box.

Do you disguise in normal life?

No, because it just draws more attention. It doesn't matter if you have a moustache and sunglasses on, fans are fans and they recognise you. You just have to embrace it.
