Solange Knowles has announced a surprise new album entitled A Seat at the Table.

The record features an impressive line-up of mainstream and left-of-centre collaborators, including Lil Wayne, Q-Tip, Dev Hynes Tweet, Kelly Rowland, The-Dream, Sampha, Moses Sumney, BJ the Chicago Kid, Kelela and Sean Nicholas Savage.

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement to share this body of work I have written, with you,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

The singer, sister of Beyonce Knowles, also described the new album as “a project on identity, empowerment, independence, grief and healing”.

The topic of identity was raised earlier this month, when the musician shared an essay on her Saint Heron website called And Do You Belong? I Do, which documented an incident in which she and her family were targeted by white audience members at a Kraftwerk concert, and described the forms of inherent racism she and other black people encounter.

The album will be released on September 30, but is not yet confirmed whether it will be an exclusive to any specific streaming service.
