What a difference five years makes in a teenager’s life. In 2008, when Miley Cyrus celebrated her 16th birthday, the guest of honour at her party was Mickey Mouse. This weekend, when the former Disney princess turns 21 in November 23, it will be a leather-clad dominatrix.

Cyrus, who deliberately swept away lingering memories of her early role as Disney pop star Hannah Montana in lewd dance routines that shocked middle America, has invited the cream of the Los Angeles bondage scene to her home on Saturday night.

Some details have leaked out through the pop singer’s own Twitter and Instagram accounts, though Cyrus has asked the New York party planners not to tell even her about all the night’s surprises.

She will be inviting her neighbours in Studio City, a historic Los Angeles area known for its high number of actors.

But part-time locals George Clooney, William Shatner, the Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara and fellow Disney graduate Selena Gomez are not expected to attend.

Nor is Liam Hemsworth, 23, a star of The Hunger Games film series, who dated Cyrus sporadically from 2009 until September when the Australian actor told friends he “could no longer keep up” with the scandalous pop singer.

There will be at least two private security companies setting up cordons around the house, a five-bedroom mansion that Cyrus bought two years ago for $3.9 million (Dh14.3 million) from the actress Juliette Lewis.

One insider who has helped plan her parties for the past three years say the events have always reflected her evolving persona.

When she was 16 Disney sent a Mickey Mouse character actor to jolly up her celebrations. At 17 the singer threw a no-alcohol 1980s- themed party in New York where she was criticised for wearing a midriff-revealing top, hotpants and high boots — mild by her current standards.

Her mother, Tish, attended her daughter’s 18th birthday party, which was overshadowed by shocked reports that Cyrus had put on leather trousers and kissed a boy.

At her 19th celebration she told her guests: “You know you’re a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley birthday cake.” Not long after she was photographed eating an erotically shaped cake.

But even for the woman who made twerking mainstream when she performed the suggestive hip-thrusting dance in a flesh-coloured bikini in August at the MTV video music awards, this weekend’s party marks a new extreme.

Cyrus also performed on the X Factor UK show on Sunday night.
