Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope. It’s your girl, Superwoman. Not the superhero, but the Indian-Canadian YouTube sensation who is bringing her world tour, A Trip to Unicorn Island, to Dubai this weekend.
Lilly Singh is a 26-year-old quirky comedy machine who isn’t afraid to pull funny faces and get candid for the camera on her YouTube channel IISuperwomanII. Her down-to-earth personality has gotten her channel 5.8 million followers and more than 700 million video views in less than five years.
From jokey rants about public displays of affection in a video titled 10 Unwritten Rules of Social Media to dressing up as her mum and dad, complete with salwar kameez and drawn-on beard, to stage a reaction to Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda video, Singh finds hilarity in everyday scenarios, drawing from her own life and family.
Born to Punjabi parents in Ontario, Canada, Singh started making videos in 2010, and she was definitely not the only one trying to break into the vlogging world. What set Singh apart from the crowd was that she was making videos about being a brown woman. Her Indian heritage was, and is, an intrinsic part of her brand. But that doesn’t stop her from drawing fans from all over the world.
“I think why my content does so well with so many different types of people is because it speaks to everyone. I’ll make a Soca music reference, I’ll use a Tamil word, I’ll do a Jamaican Patois accent. I know about all these people and I’m not afraid to indulge in their culture,” Singh said in an interview with the Toronto Sun.
Coming to Dubai, Singh can expect to see a varied crowd of fans who are anxious to see how she jumps from talking to a camera on YouTube to performing live to a massive crowd.
“I think you can expect to see my channel come to life firstly, so everything you love on my channel, whether it’s the comedy, the inspiration, the parent characters, that’s all going to come to the stage, but I think for the first time my audience can see something they’ve not seen before, which is me putting on a theatrical production with a strong message behind it,” Singh told the AU Review.
And what is Singh’s message? You’ll probably find it on Unicorn Island, which she describes as a “deep metaphor for a happy place.”
“In my life I’ve gone through a lot of really hard times, I went through depression and had so many challenges that I overcame. And I overcame because I just decided to be happy,” she says in a video promoting the tour.
Her positive attitude towards life is something Singh wants to spread to her fans using the platform she has worked hard to construct for herself.
“I truly believe everyone has Unicorn Island within them. Sometimes we just forget … my tour is going to be about reminding people that life is beautiful, that they are awesome, and that Unicorn Island does exist,” she adds.
Well if Superwoman says so, it probably does.
Don’t miss it!
