Jo Koy gets honourary doctorate just before hitting Abu Dhabi Arena

The doctor will see you now — and he’s prescribing laughter. 

Comedy heavyweight Jo Koy has officially added “Dr.” to his name after receiving an honourary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) on May 21. 

The timing couldn’t be better, as the newly-minted doctor of comedy prepares to bring the house down at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on May 29 as part of Abu Dhabi Comedy Season.

A proud Filipino-American (real name: Joseph Glenn Herbert) with a career that’s taken him from grimy open mics to global stardom, the 53-year-old Jo Koy has built a reputation for blending heart, hilarity, and heritage into his storytelling. 

His shows are a masterclass in turning personal experiences into universal punchlines.

During his commencement speech, Dr. Koy got candid with graduates, reflecting on the uphill battle that shaped his journey:

“It’s not easy getting to where you want to go. It takes a lot of hard work, it takes a lot of sacrifice... and a lot of falling flat on your face. That’s when you build the grit, the heart, and the strength to keep pushing.”

He even joked about his unconventional “schooling”:

“My schools were bad nightclubs that did comedy on Tuesdays... I would go anywhere that would give me five minutes. That was my school.”

The honourary degree celebrates more than just laughs — it honours Jo Koy’s role in reshaping cultural representation in mainstream comedy.
