The proof is Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid, who join a long list of famous couples known for their on-again, off-again romances. The singer and model — who have reportedly broken up and reconciled before — were spotted kissing on Sunday, after announcing their split in March. Here are nine other couples that have kept people guessing over their relationship status.
Justin Bieber/Selena Gomez
Since Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez got together in 2011, it’s been a roller coaster romance documented in many songs penned about one another. Gomez famously left a shady comment on Bieber’s Instagram when he started dating someone new in 2016: “If you can’t handle the hate, stop posting pictures of your girlfriend.” The pair got back together earlier this year, despite Gomez’s mum’s protests, but it seems they may have split yet again.

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams met on set of tear-jerker The Notebook in 2003, but disliked each other at first. They began dating (and shared an iconic smooch at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards) and split by 2007. Afterwards, Gosling called McAdams “one of the great loves” of his life. “Rachel and my love story is a hell of a lot more romantic than [The Notebook],” he told GQ magazine. “The only thing I remember is we both went down swingin’ and we called it a draw.”
Prince William/Kate Middleton
The royal couple just welcomed their third baby, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the college sweethearts. They began dating at university in 2003, but split in 2007, due to “being different characters and stuff”, according to the prince himself. They got back together in 2010.
Scott Disick/Kourtney Kardashian
Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashian met in 2004, and broke up for the first time in 2006. They got back together and had their first child, Mason, in 2009. Disick asked the Kardashian to marry him, but she rejected his proposal. They had two more children, but Disick’s heavy partying and cheating rumours plagued the relationship. The pair are currently not dating.
Liam Hemsworth/Miley Cyrus
Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus met in 2009 when filming romantic drama The Last Song. They were broken up by August of 2010, back together by September, and off again in November. Still, the pair reunited and were engaged by 2012, before splitting in 2013. By 2016, Cyrus was spotted wearing an engagement ring again; the pair are now proud parents to adopted pup Dora.

The OC’s Rachel Bilson and Star Wars’ Hayden Christensen met in 2007 on the set of Jumper, and were engaged the following year. They called off the engagement in 2010, but got back together soon after. They had a child together in 2014. They separated late last year, after celebrating their 10-year anniversary together.

Brian Austin Green met Megan Fox in 2004, when he guest-starred on her TV series Hope & Faith; Green was 30, Fox was 18. Fox had his named tattooed on her the following year. They were engaged by 2006, split by 2009, and back together that same year. They became engaged again, and wed in 2010. They had two children before Fox filed for divorce in 2015, but the pair had another child together in 2016.

Chris Evans and Jenny Slate began dating in 2016 after meeting on the set of the movie Gifted. Slate said she felt surprised she was Evans’ “type” when he pursued her. They broke up in 2017, but sang each other’s praises; Evans called Slate his “favourite human”. “There’s just nothing to not love about her,” he said. The pair recently got back together, but in a New York Times profile of Evans released in March, it was revealed that they had broken up a second time.
The Weeknd/Bella Hadid
Rumours emerged last month that The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and Bella Hadid had rekindled their romance at Coachella. The singer and model began dating in 2015, but split in December that same year. They made their red carpet debut at the 2016 Grammy Awards, then split again. Tesfaye began seeing Selena Gomez, but last year, after Tesfaye and Gomez split, he was seen leaving Hadid’s New York home. It’s unclear where the pair stand now.
