Actress Penelope Cruz and her sister Monica Cruz know the pains of picking the right handbag when you’re a mother. That’s why they’ve taken a more sensible approach to their capsule for Italian handbag brand Carpisa, which launched its first store at The Dubai Mall on Thursday evening, with Penelope in attendance.

“[Monica and I] are mothers, so we know when you choose the bag in the morning, it’s not going to be only about the way it looks. It’s going to be more about something practical. Some of the bags, we do in three different sizes — and we always use the biggest one,” Penelope told Gulf News tabloid!, with a laugh.

The Spanish actress, who raises 4-year-old daughter Luna and 7-year-old son Leo with her actor husband Javier Bardem, fought to bring riskier and stronger colours to the collection, too.

“I think you feel like wearing a good orange, a good red in spring or summer,” she said.

Clad in a floor-length, pearl white ensemble, Penelope cut an elegant figure as she inaugurated the opening of the store at Dubai Mall’s newly launched Fashion Avenue. The actress has been working with Carpisa for three years. Despite occasional creative disagreements with her sister that keep things interesting, the pair often sees eye-to-eye.

“We have very similar taste. Sometimes, if they start talking to us about a collection, we go in separate ways and look for ideas and research, and then we come back and bring very similar things to the table. Maybe we haven’t even talked about it,” she said.

Penelope’s visit to Dubai came hot on the heels of an announcement that she would co-star in Jessica Chastain’s all-female spy thriller, 355. Lupita Nyong’o, Fan Bingbing and Marion Cotillard will also star in the upcoming feature.
