'Gossip Girl' and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star has died aged 39

Back in the 2000s and a little beyond, a young Michelle Trachtenberg epitomised the phrase ‘belle of the ball.’ Whether it was making an impact professionally with her high-profile roles in popular shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, or slaying on the red carpet and award functions, the vibrant actress seemed to have captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of fans worldwide.
Trachtenberg rose to fame as a child star with several television appearances, including a memorable stint as Nona F. Mecklenberg in The Adventures of Pete & Pete, a delightfully quirky show about two brothers with the same name that many regard as a cult classic now.
“As a little girl, there was no one I wanted to be more than Nona, the weirdest kid and most loyal friend around. RIP,” posted a fan on Twitter.
She drew a legion of new fans portraying Dawn Summers, the younger sister of hit supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s eponymous protagonist (Sarah Michelle Gellar), for 66 episodes between 2000 and 2003. Trachtenberg and Gellar’s bonding extended off screen as well. In November 2024, she posted a glamorous throwback photo with Gellar, writing, “Yes, I’m taller”, to which the latter cheekily responded, “What like that’s hard?!?”
Trachtenberg’s fanbase and repertoire expanded yet again when she showcased a delicious penchant for wickedness, manipulation and wit as mean girl Georgina Sparks in 28 episodes of the teen drama Gossip Girl from 2008 to 2012. With her relentless flair for juvenile villainy, Trachtenberg as Sparks was the antagonist we all loved to hate and ended up becoming a fan favourite.
A quintessential teen icon whose trendy sense of style matched her talent, Trachtenberg starred in several memorable films, including EuroTrip and 17 Again. My favourite has always been 2005’s Ice Princess, where she plays a brainy teenager who, while aspiring to be a champion figure skater, has to take ice skating lessons in secret so as not to upset her mother’s conventional dreams for academic excellence. Based on a popular novel by Meg Cabot, Ice Princess, even with its slightly clichéd premise, was the perfect vehicle for Trachtenberg’s ability to emote the vulnerability, uncertainty and joy that comes with being a teenager who wants to dream differently. Predictable but inspiring, it’s a film that I never tire of revisiting thanks to Trachtenberg’s luminous screen presence.
While she sadly never attained the level of fame that her earlier roles brought, Trachtenberg continued to work steadily in films and television, most recently reprising her Gossip Girl character Georgina Sparks for the show’s reboot (2021-2023).
Trachtenberg passed away on February 26 in New York at the age of 39, after reportedly battling health issues. Colleagues and friends paid tribute on social media, with Gossip Girl star Blake Lively writing on Instagram, “You knew when she entered a room because the vibration changed. Everything she did, she did 200%. She laughed the fullest at someone's joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself."
A fitting tribute to a talented actress who has left us too soon.
