‘Malgudi Days’ by R. K. Narayan: A book that pulls you in

I had entered a bookstore along with my grandmother who told it was a good one. When I first saw the place, I did not know whether they had “my type” of books. But, then I was then obsessed with stories, which I now prefer to call as sappy stories.

The woman behind the counter suggested and encouraged me to buy a particular book, but I was reluctant to do so. According to me, the title ‘Malgudi Days’ sounded like it would have a lot of text-book type history in it, and I am pretty sure no student would like being reminded about their school when they are finally taking a break and enjoying the sun.

Written by R. K. Narayan, ‘Malgudi Days’ is a wonderful book, which has the capability to pull its reader right into the heart of the fictional village of Malgudi. With every short story I finished, my appreciation for the wonderful man grew and my passion for his work was like fire, hungry for more and more.

Although I love this man’s work, I have only been able to lay my hands on three of his books as my school education tends to pull me away for hours from the world I am very much passionate about.

Though I could not read or find his books in my school library, I came across various other authors who had written such classics.

These were the very people, who according to me made one fall in love with the art of literature, reading over and over, again. Their stories were about common people, just like you and me.
