When Bollywood legend booked 100 hospital rooms to keep actress’s pregnancy secret

Bollywood has witnessed numerous legendary romances, but few rival the unconventional love story of Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Despite facing societal disapproval and personal challenges, their relationship evolved into one of the film industry's most enduring and iconic partnerships.

Their relationship began in the early 1970s on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawan. In 1980, the couple tied the knot—even though Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children: Sunny, Bobby, Vijeeta, and Ajeeta. Their decision was met with resistance from families and fans alike, but their commitment remained unshaken.

One of the lesser-known but deeply touching chapters of their love story unfolded in 1981 during Hema Malini’s first pregnancy. Ahead of daughter Esha Deol’s birth, Dharmendra reportedly booked all 100 rooms in a nursing home to ensure total privacy.

This extraordinary act of love was revealed by Hema's close friend Neetu Kohli on the show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. “No one even knew that Hema was expecting,” she said. “Dharam ji booked all the rooms just to make sure she had peace and privacy. It was his way of protecting his wife and their unborn child.”

More than a lavish gesture, it was a quiet, powerful move to shield Hema from the media glare during a vulnerable time.

Interestingly, Dharmendra and Hema Malini chose to live separately even after marriage. In an interview with Lehren TV, Hema addressed their unusual arrangement: “Nobody wants to be like that; it happens... Every woman wants to have a husband and children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way.”

She added, “I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well.” Despite living apart, Hema confirmed that Dharmendra has always been present for her and their family.

Together, they raised daughters Esha and Ahana Deol. From Dharmendra’s first marriage, sons Sunny and Bobby Deol went on to become successful actors, further cementing the family’s legacy in Bollywood.
