Deepika Padukone to play Suhana's mother in Shah Rukh Khan’s 'King'?

Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone are set to share the screen once again in the upcoming action thriller King, directed by Siddharth Anand.

While the film is primarily anticipated as Suhana Khan’s full-fledged theatrical debut, Padukone is reportedly slated for a significant cameo.

According to a report by PeepingMoon, Padukone will portray Suhana Khan’s mother and Shah Rukh Khan’s former lover in the film. Though not a lead role, her character is said to be integral to the plot, allegedly sparking the central conflict. Both Khan and Anand were reportedly eager to cast Padukone, and she accepted the role without hesitation.

This role adds to a growing list of maternal characters played by Padukone in recent years, including Shah Rukh Khan’s mother in Jawan (2023), Ranbir Kapoor’s mother in Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022), and the mother of Kalki in Kalki 2898 AD (2024). While her performances continue to receive acclaim, some fans online have expressed fatigue over her recurring motherly roles.

King was originally set to be directed by Sujoy Ghosh but is now helmed by Siddharth Anand, known for Pathaan (2023) and Fighter (2024). The film is being produced jointly by Marflix Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment. It is currently in pre-production, with filming expected to begin between May and June in Mumbai. A theatrical release is planned for 2026.

The film also features Abhay Verma, of Munjya fame, in a significant role. There is speculation that Abhishek Bachchan may appear as the antagonist.

King will mark the sixth on-screen collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, and their third consecutive project following Pathaan and Jawan. Reports also hint at a possible reunion in Pathaan 2, which is expected to release in 2026.
