The enigmatic star talks family life, film success and why she fears for her children
In her early days, Angelina was as famous for her love of knives, tattoos and vials of blood, as she was for her incredibleon-screen presence. Since then she has carved out a new persona.
Now, the 38-year-old is making a return to her dark side for her latest role in Disney’s Maleficent. Taking the title lead as the evil villainess who curses Sleeping Beauty to 100 years of slumber, Jolie was in somewhat unchartered territory as she abandoned her beautiful looks and donned gnarled black horns and spooky make-up for the macabre part.
With Maleficent wowing audiences in cinemas around the world, Jolie opens up about her wicked new role and her dark past.
Have you always been a Disney fan?
Did you know much about the character before?
Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favourite. I was terrified of her but I was so drawn to her. I wanted to know what she was like and who she was, and she had this elegance and this grace and yet she was so cruel. She was just wonderfully, deliciously cruel.
Did you have fun with the role?
We take turns working – we never film at the same time, so one of us is always home with the kids. Our family comes first; we’re very lucky to have the chance with the careers that we have. »
Which do you prefer – you working and Brad being at home, or vice versa?
When I am home with the kids!
