The single most important appliance in your UAE home is your air conditioner. In the summer you’ll be able to live without your TV, your microwave and even your fridge (for a limited time maybe), but not your air conditioner. PW asks Dubai handyman mrUsta on how to maintain your AC, helping you breath easy and lower your monthly energy bills as well.

1. Clean or change the filter at least once a month

Some AC models come with disposable filters, while others have filters that can be cleaned with water. Regardless of the filter type, cleaning the filter on a regular basis should be your number one priority. With dirty and dusty filters, your AC system will have to work harder to deliver comfortable cool air to the home. It’s basically the equivalent of covering your face with a plastic bag leaving one tiny hole to breathe from.

2. Keep the outdoor unit clean

The outdoor unit, or condenser, should always be kept clean and free of any blockages. Plants, or other debris can clog and damage the condenser, causing it to run less efficiently. Using a clean cloth or brush, gently clean the coil from the fins. Make sure not to use a lot of force or you may bend the fins. Just don’t forget to turn off the thermostat before attempting to clean the unit.

3. Clean the indoor ductwork

Just like your own internal ductwork, blocked AC ductwork can be damaging. Because ductwork is hidden within ceilings and walls, only a professional should take care of this (you wouldn’t clean out your own ductwork, would you?). You can keep parts of your ductwork clean and dry by removing the registers (i.e. the fines) and inspecting/wiping the visible parts of the ducts. You can also check for wear or water damage. Be especially weary of any moisture build-up as those could lead to the growth of potentially harmful mold. Call a professional immediately to handle this.

4. Check and maintain the fan belts

Inspect the fan belts regularly and adjust or replace them if needed. The fan belt ensures that your AC is working at its best efficiency, keeping your DEWA bills down.

5. Schedule a tune-up by a professional

You should hire a professional to inspect and service your AC unit once in a year, especially right before the summer. This is a minimal investment considering that the professional can catch major problems before they happen, saving you thousands of dirhams (and liters of sweat) later on.
