Filipinos upbeat on progress

Manila: Amid the stench of government corruption, armed conflict in the southern Philippines and threats of job losses due to the financial crisis, seven out of ten Filipinos remain optimistic on the Philippines' progress.

A Pulse Asia Incorporated survey conducted between October 14 and 27 showed that the majority of the Filipinos were upbeat about their country.

The survey asked respondents coming from various areas in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao whether they agreed with the statement: "This country is hopeless".

Of the 1,200 adults surveyed, 68 per cent disagreed with the statement, 13 per cent agreed while 18 per cent remain undecided.

The survey cited various issues including political turmoil involving President Gloria Arroyo and clashes in the south.
