Dubai: Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation, known as Empower, is to invest Dh1.8 billion over the next five years to cool 400 buildings in Jumeirah Village Triangle and Jumeirah Village Circle.

Following a deal with developer Nakheel, Empower will build six cooling plants in phases in the two communities, ultimately providing 260,000 refrigeration tons (RT).

The first 30,000RTs will begin in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Empower CEO Ahmad Bin Shafar said the deal was in line with Empower’s expansion strategy and the growing demand for district cooling.

“Over the past few years, we saw a dramatic expansion that made us the largest global provider in terms of capacity,” he said. “However, this did not cool down our ambition, so we started a new strategy this year and signed series of agreements. The next stage will see several partnerships and agreements in response to the wide demand for district cooling services.”

Empower currently produces 1.1 million RT to large-scale real-estate developments in Dubai, including Business Bay, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Lake Towers and Ibn Battuta Mall.
