There’s something deeply rousing about the name Maserati. Part opera, part octane, it resonates with the unmistakable timbre of Italian sensuality and engineering pedigree. For nearly a century, this Modena-born marque has walked the fine line between elegance and aggression, crafting machines that stir the soul as effortlessly as they shred tarmac. Though its history is rich with grand tourers and purposeful racers, Maserati’s most thrilling chapters have often been written in coupe form – lean, sculpted silhouettes charged with restless energy, daring those behind the wheel to dream faster.

The MC20, unveiled in 2020, was one such lightning strike that didn’t just mark a design renaissance for Maserati, but recalibrated the brand’s very pulse. With its in-house Nettuno V6, dramatic butterfly doors, and an unfiltered focus on the driver, it was purity rendered in motion. Now, five years later, Maserati revisits that high note – this time modulating it into something even more distilled with the new MC Pura.

Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this month – fittingly, being a temple for enthusiasts of unfiltered performance – the MC Pura is more than a sequel to the MC20. It’s Maserati doubling down on its core DNA. The name itself, a fusion of “MC” and “pura” (Italian for “pure”), hints at the mission: to strip back, refine, and deliver an experience as close to the essence of the Trident as mechanically possible. It’s available in two forms – a fixed-roof coupé and the Cielo convertible.

At its core lies the Nettuno engine, unchanged because Maserati thinks it didn’t need to be. The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6, developed entirely in-house, still churns out 630 horsepower and 720Nm of torque. Its racing-derived pre-chamber combustion tech with twin spark plugs remains a standout innovation, giving this combustion-only powertrain a level of efficiency and punch that remains relevant even in a hybrid-heavy landscape. Paired with a carbon-fibre monocoque that keeps weight below 1,500kg, the MC Pura boasts a segment-leading weight-to-power ratio, and thanks to that engine, a soundtrack that’s as rich and operatic as ever.

More than the technical upgrades, it’s the emotional refinements that truly elevate this model. The bodywork has been subtly sculpted to convey greater clarity and confidence. Front and rear fascias are cleaner, more assertive – evoking the spirit of the MCXtrema without veering into full-blown track car territory. The signature butterfly doors return, adding their unmistakable drama, while the optional Cielo’s retractable glass roof delivers a layered sensory experience: opaque when you seek solitude, transparent when you want a glimpse of the sky, and fully open when nothing but the wind will do.

Inside, the MC Pura embraces Alcantara with a distinctly modern twist with laser-etched Ice trim that reveals Trident motifs shimmering in iridescent tones. The effect isn’t flashy; it’s subtly futuristic. It evokes depth, dimension, and a renewed attention to detail that feels like Maserati has reconnected with its heartbeat. A new steering wheel, inspired by the GT2 racer, anchors the driver-focused cabin – flat-topped, flat-bottomed, and optionally illuminated with gearshift indicators for those with track-day ambitions.

Built at Maserati’s historic Viale Ciro Menotti facility in Modena, the MC Pura is the brand leaning fully into what it has always done best – crafting pure, exhilarating coupes and convertibles. In a world hurtling toward electrification, the MC Pura holds its ground as proof that combustion, when executed with precision and artistry, still has a place. It’s a reminder that performance, when grounded in heritage and honed with restraint, can deliver the most rewarding thrills behind the wheel
