Dubai: Good news is in store for motorists heading out of International City, as a new bridge has cut their journey time to Downtown Dubai by as much as 50 per cent.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai opened the new flyover as part of the first phase of the development project of Al Awir Road and the entrances of the International City.

The project aims to reduce traffic congestion between Nouakchott Street, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed and Al Awir roads by constructing bridges that will shorten the journey’s time by 50 per cent.

The project was carried out after Dragon Mart’s extension brought an increase in traffic snarls to the area, which is located near International City.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said: “The opening of Al Awir Road Improvement Project (Phase I) will contribute to the smooth flow of traffic from International City heading to Downtown Dubai.

“It included the construction of a bridge with an estimated capacity of 1,000 vehicles per hour, which will ease the traffic pressure on the roundabout at the junction of Al Awir and Shaikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.

"It will be easy for motorists coming from Hatta to access the Dragon Mart and the International City via Al Awir Road,” said Al Tayer.

The construction work included improving the left exits and U-turns from International City and Dragon Mart, and involved the construction of a two-lane flyover from Warsan 1 Street to Al Awir Road in the direction of Dubai Downtown.

“It will enable turns for traffic running from Al Awir Road to Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road, free traffic movement from Hatta to Dubai via Al Awir Road directly to Warsan 1 Street, and entrances to the International City and Dragon Mart through a one-lane bridge,” explained Al Tayer.

The new project also included a three-lane service road parallel to Al Awir Road in both directions to ensure free traffic movement and separate it from the traffic of the International City, Dragon Mart and Al Warqa.

In addition, the four roundabouts in International City were turned into signalised junctions with expanded lanes.
