New York: The UAE on Wednesday announced a package of contributions and initiatives to UN Women, the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, during the annual pledging event held as part of the annual session of the entity at the United Nations headquarters in New York from 17-19 June.

The contributions include a five million dollar donation to the core budget of UN Women for the period 2014-2016, funding the opening of a regional office for UN Women in Abu Dhabi, appointing a senior adviser from the UAE to work at the headquarters in New York and supporting the efforts of UN women in preparation for the 2015 global review of women, peace and security.

In her statement at the event, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, said, “These contributions demonstrate the UAE’s recognition of the importance and the value of the leading role played by UN Women in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women. The contributions are a re-affirmation of the UAE’s strong support to UN Women, and of the vision of Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, GWU, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, FDF, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.”
