Dubai: A total of 23 people died in traffic accidents duing the first six months of this year under the jurisdiction of Al Rashidiya police station, an oficial said on Monday.

Brigadier Saeed Hamad Bin Suliman, Director of Al Rashidiya Police station, said the traffic fatalities had shown a marked increase from the 10 recorded during the same period last year.

Five people died in run-over accidents, 14 died in vehicular collisions, two died from vehicles hitting a solid object and two fatalities were due to vehicles overturning, he said.

“We have recorded 226 traffic accidents that involved 452 vehicles, of which 118 happened in the morning and 108 in the evening. The accidents resulted in 220 injuries, of which 14 were severe, 82 moderate and 78 were minor,” he said.

There were 12 serious accidents on Emirates Road, of which one resulted in four deaths.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested four people for begging since the launch of the Dubai Police campaign against begging a few weeks before Ramadan.
