Dubai: The mayor of Montreux, Switzerland was in Dubai on Wednesday to promote the country’s food and beverage brands.

During a tour of Al Maya supermarket at the Murooj complex, the mayor, Laurent Wehrli, viewed Swiss products across different categories, such as confectionery and dairy. Some of the brands present include Nestle and Kambly.

“Many people from the Emirates come to my city because they have apartments or houses there. Last year I was in Dubai, and this year in Abu Dhabi to strengthen the relationship between them and us,” Wehrli said.

For supermarket chain Al Maya, which has over 200 Swiss products across its outlets, the addition of Swiss brands helps widen its product range and boost sales, said Kamal Vachani, the group’s director.

“The idea is to import more Swiss products. Switzerland is known for its chocolates — we need to import a lot of dark chocolates and have a large variety of sugar-free chocolates,” Vachani said.

The top products that are exported from Switzerland to the UAE are watches, pharmaceutical products and chocolates, Wehrli said.
