Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inspected on Sunday morning the new Punitive and Rehabilitation Establishments in Sharjah.

He toured the new Punitive and Rehabilitation Establishment (the new central jail) and was briefed about the project.

The first phase of construction work at the new central jail, which is being built at a cost of Dh400 million in Sharjah’s Al Ramtha area,is near completion.

The new jail will be able to house 3,000 inmates when it is complete.

Dr Shaikh Sultan has also ordered to build a separate quarantine facility for women as well as to provide comfort to the jailed mothers and care for their children.

Dr Shaikh Sultan instructed police to focus on rehabilitation and guidance of the inmates in order to help them return to normal life.

He also ordered them to equip it with facilities that meet international standards.

Brigadier Saif Mohammad Al Ziri Al Shamsi, Sharjah Police commander-in-chief, thanked Sharjah Ruler for his continuous support to Sharjah Police to upgrade the security system in the emirate.

Brig Al Ziri said that Dr Shaikh Sultan has ordered to finish the construction work as soon as possible and move inmates to the new facility.

He said that the police are also working on listing inmates with good conduct, regardless of their jail term, to help them get early release and send them back to their families.

Engineer Ali Bin Shaheen Al Suweidi, chairman of Sharjah Public Work Department, said the new central jail, which is being built on a 17,000 metre-square area will have separate facilities for men and women inmates, housing for employees, a control room in addition to visitors’ areas.

The control room at the facility will be the first of its kind in the region and it contains analytical cameras in addition to surveillance cameras. All gates and locks will be managed by the control room.

The building of the men’s jail consisted of three floors, ground and two floors and it contains two wings with 16 cells and 16 beds, food court , prayer room, rest room, library and a workshop.
