Sharjah: Sharjah Police have arrested a three-member gang caught in possession of counterfeit gold jewellery.

Police confirmed the Pakistani trio, comprising two men and one woman, was arrested after complaints from a number of jewellery stores in Sharjah.

Employees at the stores told police the woman came into the shop and asked them to exchange her counterfeit gold jewellery with real gold or to sell it. She showed a bill to prove her gold was genuine.

When a shop employee noticed the woman’s gold was fake, she fled the shop. The employee immediately contacted the police who came to the gold market and arrested the woman.

They found a number of counterfeit gold items in the woman’s possession. She led police to her accomplices, who were also at the gold market, via a sting operation.

Modus operandi

The suspects said they were on a visit visa and staying in a hotel. They told police they had manufactured the counterfeit gold pieces and fake bills in an Asian country. They said they split the money between them after carrying out their crimes.

The suspects have been referred to the public prosecutor.

Sharjah Police thanked jewellery store employees for being alert and informing them about the fake gold.

They urged all community members to cooperate with the security agencies and report any suspicious acts or crimes on 999 or 06-5632222 or the toll-free number Najeed 800 151 or via SMS on 7999 or www.shjpolice.gov.ae/najeed.
