Sharjah: A housemaid has been arrested for stealing Dh101,725, in addition to jewellery worth Dh100,000, from her sponsor’s house.

The arrest was made in less than 12 hours of the crime being committed.

The robbery took place in Khor Fakkan when the maid took the jewellery and the money placed in a closet and ran away.

Colonel Mohammad Abdullah Al Obad, Director of the Eastern Area police, said as soon as the police was notified about the robbery by the Emirati sponsor, identified as A.A.M., who discovered the theft, a security team was formed to investigate the case and track down the housemaid

The Bangladeshi housemaid, identified as Y.A.Y., was arrested 12 hours later and she confessed to stealing the money and the jewellery when she discovered their hiding place while cleaning the house. She placed the stolen goods in a plastic bag in the kitchen before fleeing from the house.

The maid is currently detained and will be referred to the public prosecution.

Colonel Al Obad urged sponsors not to put their full trust in their maids and to keep money and precious belongings out of sight.

Sharjah Police appealed to homeowners to be careful when dealing with domestic workers and not to reveal the whereabouts of valuables to them even if they are good workers.

They urged them to keep their valuables and cash in a safe place.
