Manama: A newly-married man is seeking to divorce his wife after he met in jail four inmates who told him they had sex with her four years earlier.

The man was jailed one week into his marriage after he was found guilty of illegal rallying, rioting and setting tyres ablaze to disrupt traffic. The court sentenced him to ten years in prison.

Inside the jail, he met four prisoners who, in talking with him about the reasons they were arrested and put behind bars, informed him that they had to face charges of having sex with an underage girl.

The four men said they met the girl who was 14 years old at the time at a public rally held by a political society from the opposition.

She agreed to leave the rally with them and they took her to a location where they had sex with her.

The case came to light after the girl’s family started looking for her at the rally and unable to find her, they asked the people present who told them they saw her leave with four men.

The family pressed ahead with the case, and following an investigation, the four men were arrested and sent to jail for underage sex even though the girl consented.

The prisoners said they were told that the case against them would be dropped if one of them agreed to marry the girl, but they all turned down the offer and preferred to go to prison.

As the four men narrated the story, they named the girl, and the new prisoner discovered that they were talking about his wife.

Shocked by the revelation, he waited until her visit to confront her. His wife confirmed the prisoners’ report, and decided to file for divorce as she argued that although she was a bride she would have to wait for her husband for ten years until he serves his prison term.

However, the husband feeling that he had been cheated and lied to by his wife, also filed for divorce and requested that she pay him back all the money he had spent on her for the marriage.

The court will look into the case later this month.
