Dubai: A porter has been accused of breaching a waitress’s modesty and molesting her when he hugged her and told her that he loves her and wants to marry her.
The 24-year-old Pakistani porter molested her in September. The woman reported the matter to the police, according to records. The 24-year-old porter stopped her while she was walking home from work at 2am.
Prosecutors charged the suspect with molesting the woman and breaching her modesty.
The suspect pleaded innocent when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.
The prosecutors said the suspect molested her.
“No, I did not,” the suspect told presiding judge Mohammad Jamal.
The 28-year-old waitress claimed to prosecutors that the incident happened while she was walking back to her residence in Naif.
“The suspect surprisingly came from behind and hugged me. Then he said ‘I love you, why are you sad … I want to marry you’. He also threatened to kill me … I cried loudly for pedestrians to help me. Then I called the police. I also informed the police that the suspect threatened me with a broken glass bottle,” she testified to prosecutors.
An Indian worker claimed to prosecutors that he realised that the suspect was drunk when he rushed to help the woman when she cried for help.
“I saw the woman shouting and crying for help when the man hugged her from behind. He was very drunk,” the worker testified to prosecutors.
The porter was quoted as admitting to prosecutors that he was drunk when the incident happened.
Presiding judge Jamal will hand out a ruling on January 17.
