Ajman: Ajman Police on Saturday said they will immediately contact motorists who commit serious violations, including jumping red lights.

Brigadier Shaikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, Ajman Police commander-in-chief, said such motorists will be asked to fines immediately and failure to settle the fine will lead to impounding of the vehicle.

For dangerous violations like jumping the red light, the police will not wait for the renewal of vehicle registration, he said

He said speeding is the main reason behind fatal accidents which are mainly caused by motorists aged 18 to 30.

The police have launched a number of safety initiatives to reduce road deaths and accidents on the road, including reducing speed limits and installation of radars. It also stopped discounts on traffic fines for Emiratis.

On Saturday, the police said it seized 50 vehicles flouting traffic rules in a crackdown against reckless driving.

The vehicles were confiscated on a single day after police received complaints from a woman about teenagers using noisy vehicles, disturbing residents’ sleep at night and endangering other road users.

“They were organising illegal rallies and performing stunts on the roads and caused chaos and panic among other motorists,” Brig Al Nuaimi said.

The confiscated vehicles included cars whose engines [were modified] to make a loud noise,” he said.

“We have to take strict measures against them to deter others from similar behaviour, and the department is determined to end this phenomenon to make the roads safe,” he added

The police recorded a 40 per cent drop in serious accidents and deaths during the first six months of this year, he said.
