Heavy rains lashed Fujairah city and Khor Fakkan and the surrounding areas late on Saturday afternoon.

Charts from the official forecaster at 5pm showed heavy to moderate rainfall over an 20-by-20 kilometre area over the eastern Emirate.

A far larger area of cloud cover and humidity was seen hovering over the sea of Oman off Fujairah’s coast.

Videos on social media showed cloudy, overcast skies opening up. A 44-second clip posted on Twitter showed water gushing down from a valley next to a wet road near Khor Fakkan, as motorists slowed down to watch.

Another video, which could not be immediately verified, showed hailstones falling in downtown Fujairah. A short clip reposted by the NCMS on its Twitter page showed vehicles driving through waterlogged roads in the city.

The National Center of Meteorology & Seismology (NCMS) first reported the rainfall at 4:10pm.

Temperatures in Fujairah hovered at around 33 degrees Celsius at the time. Meanwhile in Abu Dhabi city and Dubai, temperatures were 34 degrees Celsius.

Earlier in the afternoon, the forecasters warned residents in Al Ain and along the Eastern coast to be cautious of “hazardous weather events of exception severity”.

Saturday’s deluge comes just two days after moderate to heavy rain and hail hit Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.

At the time, NCMS forecasters predicted light to moderate rains on Saturday in an area stretching from Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

Sunday weather

The UAE’s weather on Sunday is expected to be partly cloudy in general and hazy at times. Some convective clouds may form by afternoon over some northern and eastern areas may associate with some rainfall at times, the NCMS said on Saturday.

Moderate winds in general, freshening at times especially in case of convective clouds, and may cause blowing dust/sand over the exposed areas at times. Sea will be slight to moderate in the Arabian Gulf and Oman sea.
