Dubai: A thunderstorm has hit the UAE from Iran and the Dubai Meteorological Office warned of 75 km/ph winds late on Friday night, but the rain will not be heavy as in early December.

"Things will get blown around," said the duty forecaster who has issued public warnings to the municipalities, radio stations, marine stations and airfields over the squally weather.

Visibility will drop to about 1000 meters and the 40 knot winds will whip up waves of between 4 to 6 feet offshore.

As the North-Westerly is starting to blow in it will help drop the day-time temperature to 23 degree Centigrade, and the minimum to between 17 and 18 degree Centigrade. "If you are going out on Saturday wear a jacket," advises the forecaster as it will be cool, windy and cloudy early Saturday.

The weather will clear up mid-day Saturday and it should be clear skies also on Sunday when everyone returns to work after the New Year weekend break.

The Dubai Airport recorded light showers early on Friday but there was no rain at other stations.

The Meteorological Office expects thundershowers over the Northern Emirates, particularly over Ras Al Khaimah.

"This won't be a record-beating rain," said the forecaster. On December 12 and 13 Sharjah recorded the highest-ever rainfall of 30.8 mm. The deluge made swamps of some streets and commuters were stuck in traffic for hours.

Some enterprising videographers shot the chaos the rains created and uploaded it on to You tube where it got hundreds of hits.

When the roads were first built here, planners did not account for heavy rains and over the past years streets have been flooded.
