Dubai: Scattered rains and thunderstorms across the country slowed air travel on Sunday.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) confirmed operational delays due to rainy conditions but officials said airport staff worked with airlines and other partners to keep departure and arrival times on schedule.

A Dubai International Airport spokesperson said all was being done to keep the airport running smoothly.

“Dubai International is experiencing some delay in arrivals and departures oweing to operational reasons and local weather conditions. Dubai Airports is working with airlines, air traffic control, and other partners to minimise any inconvenience to our customers. While passengers are advised to check dubaiairports.ae or contact their respective airline for updates on their flights, check-in times at the airport remain as normal,” the spokesperson said.

Emirates flights are operating as per schedule as visibility in the city is clear.

Officials with Abu Dhabi airport could not be reached by press time for comment.

Inclement weather is nothing new for airport operators, especially in UAE winter months when rain, sandstorms and fog advisories are routinely issued by the national weather bureau.

It is rare for UAE airports to cancel or divert flights.

The most recent event affected by rain was Dubai Air show, when a downpour on the fourth day of the exhibition forced organisers to hold a meeting and cancel the flying display. In 2012, a sandstorm caused tanker movements to be suspended and the airports across the country were made to endure minor delays.

The drizzle started on Saturday and has been continuous since with some showers, with steady showers forecast for some areas. The skies are expected to be generally clear on Monday.
