Dubai: Water jet blasters are being used to remove markings and paint spilt on roads in Dubai, the Roads and Transport (RTA) announced on Monday.

The cutting-edge technology, which is also used in removing rubber deposits from aircraft tyres caused by friction on runways, is faster, more efficient and eco-friendly.

“The RTA is a pioneer in introducing the water jet blasting technology in removing markings and paint spilt on road surfaces to the region. Using the technology, along with the re-sucking of used water, is environment-friendly and does not inflict any harm to the public health compared to the old method of sand blasting,” said Maitha Bin Udai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency

She added that the new technology is economical, quick and free from negative impacts on the flow of traffic as it doesn’t require traffic diversions.

“The capacity of the tank of the new machine is 12,000 litres whereas the tank of the old machine was only 5,000 litres, which means it saves more than double the time needed to do the same process using the old machine,” she said.

The new machines are fitted with accessories and tools enabling use in narrow places such as parking areas. The new procedure is also characterised by high speed, equalling 10 times the speed of the old model.

“It has the capacity to clean 600 square metres per hour, whereas the area cleaned using the traditional method is not more than 40 square metres per hour,” added Maitha.
