Dubai: The purpose of traffic signals are quite simple to follow.

Yet drivers continue to misread the signs.

One trucker, who was caught on CCTV along Sharjah’s roads on Monday, saw the yellow traffic light and tried to beat the red light – with disastrous results.

In a public service announcement, Sharjah Police posted a video on their official Twitter account warning drivers not to speed at a yellow light.

“Dear drivers, a yellow light doesn’t necessarily mean Hurry!” warned Sharjah Police.

According to previous Gulf News reports, Dubai Police issued 19,270 traffic tickets to motorists for jumping the red signal during the first seven months of 2017 compared to 29,328 tickets for the offence in the period last year.

The new Federal Traffic Law, which came into effect on July 1, means that the fine for light vehicles jumping the red signal is now at Dh1,000 and 12 black points, which also includes impounding the vehicle for 30 days.

For trucks, the fine for jumping a red light is Dh3,000 and driver’s licence will be suspended for one year.
