Dubai: A man was caught by a speed radar on Dubai roads making an obscene gesture, and was later found to be on his way to the airport to proceed for Umrah.

Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said that in the last few days of Ramadan one of the radars on Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard caught a speeding motorcyclist.

“The photo showed that the driver had a passenger behind him, and that the passenger was making an obscene gesture at the radar. The motorcycle also did not have a number plate,” he said.

Although the motorcycle did not have a number plate, Dubai Police were able to track it down.

When the driver was questioned, he said he was driving his American friend, who is of Asian origin, to the airport as his friend was travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.

The driver was transferred to the traffic prosecution for taking part in this inappropriate behaviour and an arrest warrant was issued for the passenger.

Col Al Mazroui warned people against making inappropriate gestures, as it is immoral and rude, adding that the radars have advanced high resolution cameras that capture very clear and detailed photos that make it easy to identify faces.

He said that this is not the first incident of its kind.

Earlier this year, Dubai Traffic Police reported there were three separate incidents in which motorists were referred to the Public Prosecution for indecently gesturing at radars while deliberately speeding past to get photographed.
